Swansea Council are developing a Placemaking Plan for the city centre.

The people who know the city centre best are those who live, work and spend their leisure time here, so we want your input into how Swansea can meet its full potential. We have set up a consultation portal to capture feedback on people’s experiences of the city centre and suggestions of what could make it better.

Introduction: We want you to help shape the future of our City

<p id="isPasted"><strong>BACKGROUND</strong></p><p>Swansea city centre has recently benefitted from significant investment and in order to build on this positive momentum, the Council has commissioned the creation of a placemaking plan to provide an updated analysis of the city centre and set out the vision for the city in the future. The plan will propose required interventions to capitalize on the city&rsquo;s strengths and address its weaknesses and set out an action plan focusing on deliverable short- and medium-term priorities.</p><p>The strategy will update and replace the Council&rsquo;s existing SCARF (Swansea Central Area Regeneration Framework) that was put in place in 2016.</p><p>The Council has commissioned a consortium led by Carter Jonas to develop the placemaking strategy plan. As part of that work, there is a stakeholder engagement aspect to inform the approach.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>SENSE OF PLACE</strong></p><p>&#39;Sense of place&#39; is a term used to describe the distinctiveness or unique character of an area. &nbsp;It describes the relationship between people and places. <h3>1. People and Community</h3><p>It is important that the local community is involved in the development of proposals and that the needs, aspirations, health and well-being of all people are considered at the outset.&nbsp;</p>

2. Location.

<p>Swansea city centre should develop in a way that uses land efficiently, supports and enhances existing places and is well connected.&nbsp;</p>

3. Identity.

<p>It is important that the positive, distinctive qualities of the city centre are valued and respected.&nbsp;</p>

4. Movement. 

<p>The Council would like walking, cycling and public transport to be prioritised providing a choice of transport modes and avoiding dependence on private vehicles.&nbsp;</p>

5. Mix of uses. 

<p>The city centre should provide opportunities for community development, local business growth and access to jobs, services and facilities via walking, cycling or public transport. Development density and a mix of uses and tenures will help to support a diverse community and vibrant public realm.</p>

6. Public Realm. 

<p>The city centre should have streets and public spaces that are well defined, welcoming, safe and inclusive, with a distinct identity. The public realm should promote opportunities for social interaction and a range of activities for all people.</p>
